Reducing RF Noise on Ships and Other Vessels Plying on Water

Communication on ships, boats and other similar vessels mainly is in the form of radio frequencies. But it happens so many times that the radio signals do not get transmitted in a smooth manner. Such poor communication might be caused due to RF noise, which is an interfering presence of frequencies that permeate the path of the original ones. Radio signal interference may occur as a result of leaked radio signals that make their way into the battery cases. These signals might travel along the power conductors and if they enter the circuit breaker panels, a coupling effect may be produced on other instruments in the vessel. This may highly affect communications as well as ship and boat operations. For resolving such issues, a device that restricts the spread of leaked signals can be used. The antennas should be periodically inspected for rusting and such deteriorating conditions. The batteries should also be changed regularly. Another way involves cleaning up the radio’s overall output. This is possible by reducing the output power. If radios are used on higher frequencies, they might suck in more power, which increases the likelihood of interference.

For ensuring smooth radio communication, indentifying the RF noise source, using RF shield and proper grounding are some factors that need to be considered. Apart from maintaining solving radio interference issues, it also is necessary for proper maintaining radar communications systems on ships and boats.
